Growing Pains

Growing Pains

Growth sounds exciting—and it is. But growth also comes with challenges.

In Acts 6, the early church was expanding rapidly. Lives were being changed, and people were coming to faith daily. But with that growth came tension. There were complaints, misunderstandings, and feelings of unfairness among the believers.

Sound familiar?

Big Idea:
Growth brings challenges—but when handled God’s way, those challenges lead to greater impact.

1. Discontent Happens
As the church grew, so did the problems. People felt overlooked. Needs weren’t being met equally.

But here’s the truth:
With growth comes change. With people comes problems. And with problems come opportunities.

Discontent doesn’t have to divide us—it can actually reveal where God wants to work. Instead of allowing frustration to create division, we’re called to pursue unity and care for one another well.

2. Direction Matters
The apostles didn’t ignore the issue—they addressed it wisely.

They recognized that everyone has a role, and they empowered others to step in and serve. This wasn’t about avoiding responsibility—it was about aligning people with their God-given gifting.

Knowledge sees the problem. Wisdom finds the solution.

Healthy churches are built when people serve where they’re called, not when a few people try to do everything.

3. Development Follows
When the church responded the right way, something powerful happened:

The message of God continued to spread.

Unity led to growth. Leadership led to multiplication. The church didn’t shrink under pressure—it expanded through it.

When the saints are unified, God is glorified, and the church is built up.

Reflection Questions:
  • Where might God be using challenges in your life to grow you?
  • Are you serving where God has gifted you?
  • How can you help bring unity instead of division?

Growth isn’t always easy—but it’s always worth it when we trust God through it.
