Why We Gather

Gospel of Matthew 5:13–14 uses two simple images to describe the role of Jesus' followers:
Verse 13 ("You are the salt of the earth"): Salt represents preserving what is good, adding value, and making a positive difference in the world. Jesus warns that if salt loses its usefulness, it no longer serves its purpose.
Verse 14 ("You are the light of the world"): Light symbolizes truth, goodness, and guidance. Jesus calls his followers to live in a way that shines before others, pointing people toward God rather than hiding their faith.
Matthew 5:13–14 teaches that Jesus' followers are called to positively influence the world by preserving goodness, living with integrity, and serving as examples that reflect God's truth and love.
